How are hazards controlled?

Engineering Controls

 Engineering controls are the first line of defense against

hazards. There are three main types of engineering
controls.
Engineering Controls

Elimination – completely removes the hazard.

This is the optimal means of control.
Substitution – replaces the hazard with a less
hazardous one.
Isolation – separates hazards from workers; for
example, installing screens to protect workers
from dust, building soundproof enclosure for the
hazard.
Elimination
 Best way to deal with safety hazard.
 Preventing exposure to hazard before it even occurs
Substitution

 Permanently reduced the risk.

 Substitute less hazardous material.
Engineering Controls

 Change the structure of the area.

 Using devices or barriers
Administrative Controls

 Establish operating procedures.

 Providing systematic and formal trainings.
PPE
 Personal Protective Equipment is worn by workers to protect them
from their environment.
Steps in a Job Safety Analysis

 Select a job to be analyzed

 Separate the job into its basic steps
 Identify the hazards associated with each step
 Evaluate the hazards
 Control each hazards.
