•Stevenage is a town and district in
Hertfordshire, England. It is to the east of
junctions 7 and 8 of the A1(M), and is between
Letchworth Garden City to the north, and
Welwyn Garden City to the south.

•The town centre covers an area of 49


hectares, including land within the ring road,
the Leisure Park, train station, & peripheral
areas.

•Stevenage is a unique example of post war


planning, contrasting with traditional historic
towns in Hertfordshire.

•26% of the town centre land is car parking, &


9% is occupied by the ring road
Access
•. Britain's first new town, Hertfordshire's most
accessible Town Centre and is convenient for all
forms of transport.

•Stevenage has excellent road links to London


and the North, being situated just off the A1M
motorway, Junction 7 and is one of the few
Town Centres in Britain designed for ease of
access by the car with dual carriageway roads
on all sides of the Town Centre and ample,
clean, well-lit and safe car parking.

•The bus station is located right in the heart of


the Town Centre and the train station is linked
by a pedestrian walkway, both offering easy
access to the shops, businesses and leisure
facilities of Stevenage.

•Situated on the East Coast mainline,


Stevenage has excellent access to Kings Cross
and the North.

•The whole of Stevenage is criss-crossed by


good quality cycleways, linking all the
residential areas to the Town Centre and
avoiding the need to cycle on the main roads.
Motorcyclists and moped riders can also use
the excellent cycle paths.
•Stevenage railway station serves the town of Stevenage in
Hertfordshire, England and lies on the East Coast Main Line
27¼ miles (43 km) north of London Kings Cross
•A distinctive feature of Stevenage is its urban landscape. It
has many roundabouts, few traffic lights, a network of
completely segregated cycle tracks, and some of the tallest
street-lights in Britain.

•Buses within and to outside the town are provided by several


operators, the main within the town being Arriva The Shires.
•Stevenage is served by the A1(M) motorway, taking traffic
both north and south. It is also served by the smaller A602
road taking traffic southeast, meeting the A10 road at Ware.
•The town is served by Stevenage railway station, a busy stop
on the East Coast Mainline. As such regular trains to London
and points north are available.

•Main shopping area is around Queensway and Westgate
•Retail park at the south of town called Roaring Meg
•Fairlands Valley is a large area of parkland with boating
lakes.
•The town is a very green town, with avenues of trees
(typically Norway Maple) throughout but also large woods
such as Monks & Whomerley Wood.
•The town's schools all have a substantial amount of ground;
key examples are Ashtree Primary School, Moss Bury
Primary School, Longmeadow Primary School and Barnwell.
•West Stevenage is designed to be a ‘leading
edge’ mixed use urban extension to Britain’s
first planned New Town, meeting high
standards of sustainability, urban design and
affordability.

The site is located approximately42
kilometres (26 miles) to the north of Central
London, 11 kilometres (7 miles) to the eastof
Luton, 72 kilometres (45 miles) to the south of
Peterborough, 40 kilometres (25 miles)
to the south east of Cambridge, and 14
kilometres (9 miles) to the north of Hertford.
Aside from Stevenage, the closest town to the
site is Hitchin which is located
approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) to the
north west and connected by the A602.

•In essence, as illustrated on the Master Plan, the
proposed development will form a linear neighbourhood
on the western edge of Stevenage between Junctions 7
and 8 of the A1(M).

• It has been planned and designed to comprise three


distinct urban villages, each with a mixed use urban core.

•The three villages will be linked by a public transport


spine which will also connect the proposed development
with the existing town of Stevenage.

Master plan
Master plan for 3600 dwellings
• A partially dedicated public transport spine will run
north-south through the West Stevenage site to
provide a convenient, attractive and safe route
between different activities.

• Virtually all of the dwellings will be located within a


400 metre (five minute) walking distance of the bus
route operating on the public transport spine.
• A number of bus only links will be provided
throughout the site in order to give priority to
bus movement.
• Connections will be made across the A1(M) to higher
order destinations including West of the A1(M) at
Stevenage Town Centre and the railway station, from
which connections can be made to other facilities in
Stevenage
• To assist in the operation of the proposed public
transport system, information on bus and rail
schedules (from Stevenage Station) and wait times will
be advertised in shops, places of employment, schools
and neighbourhood facilities, on buses, at bus stops
and on the neighbourhood web site.
