Introduction to Robotics

History of Robotics
What is a robot?
What does a robot look like?
History of Robotics

• 1921 – The term “Robot” was first

used in a play called “Rossum’s
Universal Robots” by the Czech
writer Karel Capek (chap’ ek).
History of Robotics

• The term ROBOT was used to

describe an artificial person. Capek
invented the term, basing it on the
Czech word “robota” which means
“forced labor”
History of Robotics

• 1941- Isaac Asimov first used the

word “robotics” to describe the
technology of robots
History of Robotics

• 1954 – The first digital and

programmable robot was invented
by George Devol, the “Grandfather
of Robotics”.
• Joseph Engelberger helped Devol
• The robot was named Unimate
History of Robotics
• 1997 – Pathfinder (named
sojourner) lands on Mars
• 2004 – The Mars exploration
rovers Spirit and Opportunity
landed on Mars
History of Robotics
• 2000 – Honda introduced
Asimo robot that can complete
office tasks, serve coffee and
kick a soccer ball
History of Robotics
• Modern Robots
What is a Robot?
• A robot is a machine that does
tasks without the help of a
person
What are the characteristics of a
robot?
• Sensing
• Movement
• Energy
• Intelligence
Components of a robot:
• Sensors
• Effectors
• Control Systems
Advantage of using Robots:
• They can perform a variety of tasks
and applications
• Robots are more precise and
consistent than human workers
• They can produce quality products in
a short amount of time
Advantage of using Robots:
• They can work at a constant speed
with no breaks, days off, or holiday
time.
• They do not complain, get sick, or get
bored
• They can work in hazardous
conditions
Disadvantage of using Robots:
• Robots cannot respond to
emergencies unless programmed to
do so
• Robots cost a lot of money
• Have high need of programming
• Robots replace human workers
Disadvantage of using Robots:
• Robots require power supply
• Have limited capabilities in degree of
movement,dexterity, sensors, vision
system, and real time response
• Robots have no emotions
