SIN in his life
1 Inthe spring, at the time when kings go off to war,
David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole
Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and
besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked

around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he

saw a woman bathing. The woman was very
beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out
about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the
daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came

to him, and he slept with her. (Now she was purifying

herself from her monthly uncleanness.) Then she went
back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to
David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

Many think they can sin and
Continue living as though
nothing had ever happened.
But the Bible clearly
teaches that the wages of sin is
death and that one sin leads to
another.
David experienced the following progression:

1. He saw with his eyes what he should

not have seen, which gave rise to sinful
desires.

2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked

around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he
saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful
, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The
man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and
the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
– 2 Samuel 11:2-3

2. Those wrong desires gave rise to

adultery

4Then David sent messengers to get her. She came

to him, and he slept with her.
– 2 Samuel 11:4
David experienced the following progression:
3. Adultery led him to hypocrisy (with Uriah)
7 When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the
soldiers were and how the war was going. 8 Then David said to Uriah,
“Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace,
and a gift from the king was sent after him. 9 But Uriah slept at the
entrance to the palace with all his master’s servants and did not go
down to his house.
10 David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” So he asked Uriah, “Haven’t

you just come from a military campaign? Why didn’t you go home?”
11 Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents,

and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open
country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love to
my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”
12 Then David said to him, “Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will

send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.
– 2 Samuel 11:7-12
David experienced the following progression:

4. Adultery and hypocrisy led him

to murder

14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and

sent it with Uriah.15 In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in
front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw
from him so he will be struck down and die.”

• The Lord was unable to give David all the riches

from your house ”

• David wanted to conceal his sin, but God expose
it publicly.
• Everything a person does in secret will be made
known in public; what we have said in the dark
• will be heard in the daylight.

one who is close to you, and he will sleep
with your wives in broad daylight”
- 2 Samuel 12:11c
Consequences of Sin

weakness he allowed in his character

not going to die. But because by doing thi
s you have shown utter contempt for the L

AREAS AFFECTED BY SIN

All unconfessed sin affects the following

areas:
• Physical: “When I kept my silent, my
bone wasted away” (Psalm 32:3a)
• Emotional: “…through my groaning all
day long. For day and night your hand
was heavy on me” (Psalm 32:3b-4a)
• Financial: “…my strength was sapped as
in the heat of summer” (Psalm 32:4b)
THE OPPORTUNITY OF REPENTANCE

• Despite the circumstances, God always

extends His infinite grace so that we
can return to the right path
• Repentance is not an emotion. It is a
personal decision that we will not
fail God again.
“The Lord has taken away your sin. You are
not going to die.”
- 2 Samuel 12:13
CONFESSION

• Genuine repentance always come

accompanied by a confession.
• It is when we acknowledge our sin
before God.

CONFESSION
Things we can learn from David’s
confession:
• It was not superficial.
• He did not try to justify what he
had done.
• He acknowledge his guilt.
• His confession was detailed.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation
for those who are in Christ Jesus”

CHANGE OF ATTITUDE
“Repentance is more than just sorrow for the past;
repentance is a change of mind and heart, a new life
of denying self and serving the Savior as king in
self’s place.”

ccording to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I kn
ow my transgressions, and my sin is always before me”
