USE

We use the simple present to talk about:


• Things that are generally true. (Facts).
I speak Spanish.
I live in Oaxaca.

• Things that occur regularly (Habits and routines):


I get up at 6 a.m every day.
ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY
Sometimes we use adverbs of frequency to say how often we do something.
o I always have breakfast at 10.
o I usually watch TV in the morning.
o I often speak English with my friends.
o I sometimes eat a big lunch on Sundays.
o I hardly ever/rarely do my homework on weekends.
o I never get up early.

Adverbs of frequency come before the verb, but sometimes can begin a sentence.
Sometimes, I cook lunch.
THIRD PERSON SINGULAR RULES
o General rule: add –s.
• Jimmy plays football every day
o If the verb ends in –o, ch, sh, s, ss, x, z, add –es.
• Jimmy fixes his car.
• Ann brushes her teeth.
• Peter goes to school every day.
o If the verb ends in consonant + y, remove y, and add –ies.
• She cries every time.
STRUCTURE
Affirmative
Subject + Verb + Complement.
Susana works in the mornings.
We do our homework in the afternoons.
Negative

do not (don’t)
Subject + + Verb + Complement
does not (doesn’t)

Susana doesn’t work in the morning.


We don’t do our homework in the afternoons.
