Recycling of flexible

pavements
What is a recycled asphalt pavement ?
 They are the old and removed pavement materials that
are reused for the construction or renovation of a new
asphalt pavement.

 These materials are generated when crushed and

screened asphalt pavements removed.
RECYCLED ASPHALT PAVEMENT

Recycled RAP is almost

always returned back into
the roadway structure in
some form, usually
incorporated into asphalt
paving by means of hot or
cold recycling, but it is also
sometimes used as an
aggregate in base or
subbase construction.
ADVANTAGES
• Material conservations.
• Conservation of energy.
• Conservation of natural resources.
• Improvement of the structure of the
recycled roads base.
• Preservation of the enviromental
reduction of conservation costs in our
communication channels.
Disadvantages

Lack of a methodology to
accurately determine the degree of
mixing between virgin asphalt and
asphalt from of the RAP. Less
workability and compactability of
the mixture. Variability of RAP
sources
 In the field of pavement rehabilitation, there will be awareness of the
importance of extending the life cycle of pavements that perform
surface improvements with the use of new aggregates and asphalts. This
practice requires the exploration of new quarries or the over exploitation
of exploration, generating great environmental impact.
 The General Management of Public Works has used the asphalt recycling
system for the first time in the improvement of the LR-416 road to
Valdezcaray. This procedure removes the old asphalt on the road and
extends it again after applying a bituminous mixture treatment, which
represents cost savings and an improvement in the energy and
environmental balance.
 Generates a lower than normal cost.
 Reduce the environmental pollution a comparation to others types
of pavement.
 Improves resistente by 14.34% a comparation to convencional
pavement.
