What is a national park?

• A tract of land declared public property by a


national government with a view to its
preservation and development for purposes of
recreation and culture.
ABOUT DACHIGAM NATIONAL
PARK
• TENVILLAGES- DAH CHEE GHAM, were
relocated from the entire zabarwan range to create
an exclusive game reserve for Maharaja.
• The other objective was to secure the drinking
water supply source for srinagar.
• It was managed by the forest department till
1951,it was shifted to wildlife department and
noted as a reserve.
• It became national park in 1981.
GEOGRAPHIC AREA
Topography
• Dachigam park is located in the zabarwan range of the
western himalyas .
• Due to vast variation in the altitudes the park is clearly
demarcated into an uneven region.
• The terrain ranges from gently sloping grasslands to sharp
rocky outcrops and cliffs.
• Dachigam is considered best in two sectors : Upper
Dachigam: Upper Dachigam in the east extends over the
higher reaches and is a good day's trek from the nearest
roadhead.
Lower dachigam :. Lower Dachigam, in the west, comprises
approximately a third of the total area and is the area most
accessible to a visitor.
Climate
• It experience moderate temperature through
out the year.
• Summer in dachigam is never scroching .
• April – June : warm temperature.
• July -August : light showers.
• Snowfall continues for entire winter season.

runs a trout fish

Accesibility
• Air: Sri nagar airport is located at a distance
of 22km and hence a good access point.
• Rail : the nearest railway station is Jammu at a
distance of 310 kms away from Dachigam
national park.
• Road: The lower Dachigam is region is
accessible via a metalled road, but higher
dachigam areas are accessible only on foot.
Accomodation

• Forest department maintain two rest houses


in the lower Dachigam.
• Hotels and other facilities are not near
Dachigam.
Best time to visit
• Best time is between april and october.
• Upper dachigam : June and August.
• Lower dachigam : september/october
