CONIC SECTIONS

CONIC SECTIONS

 Conic section is a figure formed by the intersection of a plane and a

right circular cone. Depending on the angle of the plane with
respect to the cone, a conic section may be a circle, an ellipse, a
parabola, or a hyperbola.
 Nondegenerate conic – if the plane does not pass through the apex.
 Degenerate conic – if the plane passes through the apex
 Parts of conic sections
 Apex – the tips of the cones intersect at a point
 Napes – the surfaces of the cones
 Generators – lines that lie on the surface of the cones.
TYPES OF CONIC SECTIONS

 Circle – if the plane is parallel to the base

1.
of the cone.
 2. Ellipse – if the plane is not parallel to any
generator but intersects each generator.
 3. Parabola – if the plane is parallel to
exactly one generator
 4. Hyperbola – if the plane that intersects the
two napes is perpendicular to the base of
the cone

CIRCLE
CIRCLE

 A circle consists of all points that are equidistant from a fixed point
called the center. The constant distances is called radius. If the
center is at the point C(h.k) with radius r and P(x,y) is any point on
the circle, then CP=r. By using the distance formula we get:
 R2=(x-H) 2 + (y-k)2

 We usually refer to this form as the center-radius form or the

standard form of the equation of the circle.
 center is at the origin
 X2 + y 2 = r 2

I can do these..

 Find the equation of the circle in a) standard

form b(general form
 (1) center at the origin, radius 4
 (2) center (-4, 3), radius 7
 (3) center (5,-6), tangent to the y-axis
 (4) center (5,-6), tangent to the x-axis

A(-1, 4) and B(4, 2).
I can do these..

 Identify the center and radius of the circle with

the given equation
 (1) x2 + y2 - 6x = 7
