BERLIN

BLOCKADE
• It consisted in the block from suministration of supplies to the part of France, Great Britan and
United States made by the USSR

• The western countries get the way of giving supplies by an airlift

• Germany was divided in the western and East Germany

• Frontiers were closed


FAST FACT

• There were used 700 aircraft during the Berlin airlift and from those ones 100 were from
civilians.

• The ones that also contributed in this were the United States Air Force, the royal Canadian air
Force, the royal Australian Air Force, The Royal New Zealand Air Force and South African Air
Force.
• Soviets left the council that was in charge from managing control over Berlin, (Potsdam
agreements broke by the allies)

• There is the idea of separating Berlin and creating two independent states, from the allies the
western Germany.

• Berlin could no longer by the capital from Germany if it was separated

• No travel between western Germany and Berlin


• Truman: Losing Berlin today may mean losing Germany for a near future.

• The airlift lasted for 321 days and there were 272,000 flights made from western Germany to
Berlin

• Tons of supplies were given by those

• Berlin airlift
• May 12 of 1949 Soviets conclude blockade failed.

• Borders were reopened

• Western Germany and Eastern Germany were established as separated republics.


DESIRES AND INTERESTS

• Allies were able to give some help to Germany, just because to make them strong and
democratic to fight communism by using the marshal plan.
• Marshal plan: Reconstruction of Europe, invested 15 billion dollars.

• Stalin will act with revenge weakening Germany


• Stealing their industrial technology and rebuild USSR
• Make communism attractive to them
• Britain and United States zones were united and was named Bisonia (later called West
Germany).

• The intention from the blockade was to affect the West part by letting them starve, stopping
the movement from sources and affect directly the economy.

• Stalin did not attack planes because of the danger from a possible war.

• The cost from U.S.A was 350 million of dollars and Great Britain spent 17 million of pound
sterling for the western supplying.
