Samaon Sulaiman

• Was a Filipino musician who is a recipient of the National Living


Treasure.
• The Maguindanaon is known for his mastery of the indigenous
Kutyapi instrument.

• Sulaiman first learned playing kutyapi at around 13 years old from
his uncle.
• He was already recognized in Maganoy for his skills in playing
the instrument as well as being a teacher to aspiring kutyapi
practioners.
• He is credited for influencing other local expert in his area such
as Esmael Ahmad, Bitul Sulaiman, Nguda Latip, Ali Ahmad,
Tukal Nanalon.
• Sulaiman also plays the kulintang, agong, gandingan, palendag,
and the tambul.

Kutyapi
A maguindano kutyapi bearing ukkil motifs. The
kutyapi or kudyapi, is a Philippine two-stringed, fretted
boat-lute.
He was proclaimed in 1993
for his outstanding artistry
and dedication to this
musical instrument,
formally called the
Maguindanaon Kutyapi, a
two-stringed plucked lute,
regarded as one of the most
technically demanding and
difficult to master among
Philippine traditional
instruments. He passed
away in 2011.
