The first week of life
• Have a spontaneous or almost reflexive smile,
which can occur as early as the baby's first few
days of life and should be present by 10 weeks
old..
• Have equal movements of the arms and legs on
both sides of the body. Lift their head briefly
when on their tummy..
• Focus briefly on objects that are near the face
and up to about 12 to 15 inches away, which is
about the distance of a breastfeeding baby
looking at their mother's face.
The 3rd week of life

• The baby is getting stronger and

changing every single day.
First
month
of life
• The first 2 months of life were
once considered a period of
psychological inactivity or at least
incomprehensibility.

• For example, considered the

newborn to be a “blooming,
buzzing confusion.”
