Understanding Information Processing Theory

Information processing theory focuses on how knowledge enters and is stored in and retrieved from memory. It examines the stages of information processing - how information is encoded through the senses and sensory register into short or long term memory for storage and later retrieval. The theory distinguishes between declarative, procedural, and episodic knowledge and proposes that information progresses through encoding, storage, and retrieval stages to become incorporated into our cognitive structure.

how knowledge enters and is stored
and retrieved from our memory. It was
one of the most significant cognitive
theories in the last century and it has a
strong implications on the teaching-
