DEFINITION OF ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT

Engineering Management or Management Engineering

• Engineering Management (EM) is a specialized form of management
that is required to successfully lead engineering or technical personnel
and projects.
• Engineering Management is a career that brings together the
technological problem-solving savvy of engineering and the
organizational , administrative, and planning abilities of management
in order to oversee complex and enterprises from conception to
completion.
ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT
MANAGEMENT?

• Getting things done through people.

• The process of achieving organizational goals by engaging in the four major
functions of Planning & Decision Making, Organizing & Staffing, Directing/
Leading and Controlling.
• Identifying a “Force”/group of people whose job is to direct the efforts and activities
to other people towards a common organizational objective.
• The performance of conceiving and achieving desired results by mean of group
effort consisting of utilizing resources, that will determine the success and failure of
an organization.
 PROJECT?
• A collection of linked activities, carried out in an
organized manner, with a clearly defined START
POINT and END POINT to achieve some specific
results desired to satisfy the needs of the
organization at the current time
 PROJECT MANAGEMENT
• A dynamic process that utilizes the appropriate
resources of the organization in a controlled
and structured manner, to achieve some clearly
defined objectives identified as needs.
• It is always conducted within a defined set of
constraints
DEFINITION OF ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT
• Example areas of engineering are :
• Product Development, Manufacturing , Construction Engineering, Design Engineering,
Industrial Engineering , Electrical Engineering, Technology, , Production or any other
field that employs personnel who perform as engineering functions.
• Engineering Managers
They manage engineers who are driven by non-commercial thinking , thus require
the necessary people skills to coach guide and motivate technical professionals.
• One of the important topic in EM is Project Management.
