PAST PERFECT
oIs a verb tense which is used to show that an action took place
once or many times before another point in the past.

oIs formed using had + past participle

EXAMPLES:

•My friends hadn´t ever gone to France.

•Had you cleaned up the mess by the time they came home?
USE 1 COMPLETED ACTION BEFORE SOMETHING
IN THE PAST
o The past perfect expresses the idea that something ocurred
before another action in the past.
o It can also show that something happened before a specific time
in the past.

OPERA BEFORE LAST NIGHT.

USE 2 DURATION BEFORE SOMETHING IN THE
PAST (NON-CONTINUOUS VERBS)
oWith non-continuous verbs and some non-continuous uses of mixed
verbs, we use the past perfect to show that something started in the past
and continued up until another action in the past.

•We had had that car for ten years before it broke drown.
•By the time, Alex finished his studies, he had been in London for over eight years.
•They felt bad about selling the house because they had owned it for more than forty
years.
SPECIFIC TIMES WITH THE PAST PERFECT
Unlike with the present perfect, it is posible to use specific time
words or phrases with the past perfect. Although this is posible, it is
usually not necesary.

SHE HAD VISITED HER JAPANESE RELATIVES ONCE IN 1993

BEFORE SHE MOVED IN WITH THEM IN 1996.
MOREOVER
oThe simple past can be used instead of the perfect past when
used “before” or “after”. The words “before” and “after” really
tell you what happens first.

Examples:
•She had visited her Japanese relatives once in 1993 before she
moved in with them in 1996.
•She visited her Japanese relatives once in 1993 before she moved
in with them in 1996.
HOWEVER
oIf the past perfect is used when it does not refer to an action at a
specific time.
oIt refers to a lack of experience in the place of an action at a
specific time.

•She never saw a bear before she moved to Alaska. Not correct
