The skydiving product

A dramatic, self-fulfilling behaviour that occurs on a specific stage with

carefully cast actors and co actors. The act is clearly defined, with the skydive

planned and rehearsed (Celsi et al. 1993: 21).

1. Pre- and post-dive activities are important


2. Actual activity itself is of relatively short duration
Market stories and theatre: Very strong sense of group identity that characterizes the
skydivers and choreographed nature of the skydiving activity
Skydivers: Skydivers view themselves as a family and above normal group identity
Actors: Students, Novices, Intermediates and Experts
Co actors : Owners, instructors, dive organizers and pilots
Theatrical experience :
a. Its own technical language (Just do it)
b. Props including parachutes, jumpsuits, helmets, goggles, logbooks, wrist altimeters,
cameras, airplanes and landing markers.
c. Clothing styles, fabrics and colours
d. Each stage has its own rituals and stories
1 Pre-experience
● On the ground – coordinating and rehearsal.
● The ascent – anticipation as the airplane ascends to the dive Opening
point.
2 The experience
● The exit – total commitment to the activity by stepping out
of the aircraft.
● Free fall – the main reason for skydiving, bringing a sense Performance
of freedom.
● Under canopy – once the parachute has opened bringing a
sense of relief, but also disappointment
3 Post-experience
● Post-performance rituals – feedback and congratulations to Finale
participants
