INSPECTION

Building structures are created at a considerable expense of time and

money. Concrete and Masonry structures are susceptible to crack, while
steel gets corroded. Steel structures also manifest loss of serviceability
by excessive deformation and buckling. Other than this many times
deterioration occurs due to adequate care and co-ordination in
enforcing the primary objective of time at construction.

(ii) Serviceability
(iii) Durability

3
Steps Involved in Investigation

1. Preliminary Investigation
2. Physical Inspection
3. Material Tests
4. Non-Destructive Tests
5. Detailed Diagnosis of Defects
6. Study of available documents
7. Estimation of actual loads and environmental effects
8. Checking Errors in Design
9. Retrospective analysis
10. Strengthening requirements
11. Relevant approach to repair

4
Scope and Objectives of Investigation

•Carbonation of effected concrete

•Depth of Carbonation and cover
•Chloride levels of concrete
•Permeability of effected concrete
•Degree of corrosion
•Load carrying capacity of effected structure
•Spread of defects
•Appearance and type of cracks
•Difference in design loads and actual service loads
•Types of defects in timber works
• Extent & Source of dampness on building
•Causes of Leakage/ overflow supply
•Causes of moisture 5
Assessment Procedure for Evaluating Damages in
Structure and Repair techniques:
For assessment of damage of a structure the following general
considerations have to be take account.
1) Physical inspection of damaged structure.
2) Presentation and documenting the damage.
3) Collection of samples and carrying out tests both in situ and in
lab.
4) Studying the documents including structural aspects.
5) Estimation of loads acting on the structure.
6)Estimate of environmental effects including soil structure
interaction.
7) Diagnosis.
DIAGNOSIS OF CONSTRUCTION FAILURES

i) General Considerations
ii) Causes of Defects
(Chemical causes, Physical Causes, Corrosion of Reinforcement)
iii) Investigation
( Observation, Questioning, Testing in the field, Laboratory Tests)
iv) Assessment
