Introduction
• Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is a huge
metropolis.
• Seoul is considered one of the most polluted
cities in the world.
• Seoul’s PM2.5 averaged 26
micrograms/m3 from 2016 to 2018.
• The air quality is degrading in a steep graph
towards worse every passing year.
Causes
• Rise in air pollution level has been caused by both internal and external factors.
• Increase in vehicular movement.
• Use of coal-fired power station.
• Increase in population.
• Chinese deserts and factories, are carried to the Korean peninsula by prevailing westerly winds.
"This is a problem of our megacities. You put millions of people
together, they're all driving vehicles, there's industry. We just exceed
the capacity of the environment to dilute,“ says Dr. Jonathan Samet (an epidemiologist)
Seoul’s PM2.5 averaged 26
micrograms/m3 from 2016 to 2018.
That puts Seoul at more than two
times the WHO annual limit. That’s
bad news for lungs in Seoul because
studies have discovered that levels
around 10 micrograms affect our
health.

Comparison
The South Korean president calls the country's poor air quality "a grave issue." But little beyond
warning people to be careful has been done to address it. Government officials in recent weeks said
they were considering closing coal-fired power plants that were more than 40 years old in a move to
tackle the pollution problem, but haven't made a decision. Meanwhile, "The same ministry is
pushing to build nine more coal plants,"

The main thing is we realise there is a problem, but do we really

want a solution to be found?
