Active and Passive Voice of the Verb Created and prepare by: Princess Diane C. Mahusay What is Active Voice? • In most English sentences with an action verb, the subject performs the action denoted by the verb. • A verb is said to be in active voice when the subject performs the verb. Examples:
Because the subject does or "acts upon" the
verb in such sentences, the sentences are said to be in the active voice. Active voice is a quality of a verb that describes when its subject is ‘acting out’’ the verb. When the opposite is true (i.e., the subject of the sentence is being acted upon by the verb), it is said to be in passive voice. What is a Passive Voice? O The passive voice is always constructed with a conjugated form of ‘‘to be’’ plus ‘‘the verb’s past participle’’. Doing this usually generates a preposition as well. That sounds much more complicated than it is—passive voice is actually quite easy to detect. Examples:
In This example the example from the active
voice is now change into the passive voice Because the subject is being "acted upon" (or is passive), such sentences are said to be in the passive voice. O (a form of ‘‘to be’’ the past participle chased) + by (preposition) + leopard Examples of Verbs in the Active Voice O Curiosity killed the cat. O Step 1: Find the subject. O (In this example, it’s Curiosity) O Step 2: Did the subject perform the verb? O (In this example, the verb is to kill, and Curiosity did perform the action of the voice. Therefore, killed is a verb in the active voice) O All power corrupts. O Step 1: Find the subject. O (In this example, it's All power.) O Step 2: Did the subject perform the verb? O (In this example, the verb is to corrupt, and All power did perform the action of the verb. Therefore, corrupts is a verb in the active voice.) When to use Active and Passive Voice O Using the active voice conveys a strong, clear tone and the passive voice is subtler and weaker. Here’s some good advice: don’t use the passive voice just because you think it sounds a bit fancier than the active voice. To Change Active to Passive Voice 1. Move the active sentence's direct object into the sentence's subject slot 2. Place the active sentence's subject into a phrase beginning with the preposition ‘‘by’’ 3. Add a form of the auxiliary verb be to the main verb and change the main verb's form Action Doer of the action Receiver Of The action Receiver of the action Action Doer of the action To Change Passive Voice Sentences into an Active Voice Sentences. 1. Move the passive sentence's subject into the active sentence's direct object slot 2. Remove the auxiliary verb be from the main verb and change main verb's form if needed 3. Place the passive sentence's object of the preposition by into the subject slot.
Because it is more direct, most writers
prefer to use the active voice whenever possible. The passive voice may be a better choice, however, when the doer of the action is unknown, unwanted, or unneeded in the sentence EXAMPLES: the writer wishes to emphasize the action of the sentence rather than the doer of the action QUIZ A.
