1. AN INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF DRUG
AND THEIR ACTIONS:
 The hospital serves as an educational laboratory for physicians
in training and the pharmacists carries an obligation to provide
authoritative information on drugs to help in the training of
this group. Therefore for this purpose the pharmacist must
have the knowledge about pharmacology, chemistry, toxicology,
Bio-pharmaceutics and enters of administration of drugs. In
addition to this, the development of new pharmaceutical
products, the responsibility of pharmacist has increased to give
information to the doctors and nurses about the new
products developed the handling and distribution of drugs is
not the task of doctor and nurses but it is the job of
pharmacist to handle such drugs for example radio isotopes
are too much dangerous if handled improperly.

 Therefore the pharmacists must have complete
knowledge of about the handling of such drugs. The
pharmacist applies his knowledge in individual
contacts with physicians as well as in his relationship
with the pharmacy and therapeutics committee, by
issuing, for example continuous of the data on drug
action, dosage, toxicity and relative costs. He is
advised upon to determine and assure the
pharmaceutical ability of drugs he dispenses,
particularly when responsibility for final selection is
delegated to the pharmacists by the medical staff and
when use of non-proprietary terminology is an
accepted practice.

2. ABILITY TO DEVELOP
PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFATURING
PROGRAM:
 Since drugs in hospital are required in large quantities
the pharmacists must have the abilities to manufacture
pharmaceutical product in bulk as to meet the
requirements of the hospitalized patients. An other
factor is economics factor which is involved i.e. the
money of the hospital can be saved. The medical staff
often requests the pharmacist to prepare drugs in
forms which are not commercially available. Therefore
the pharmacist must be prepared to apply this source
and to offer a flexibility that is not ordinarily expected
of pharmacists in other circumstance. This point is
emphasized since the hospital is a site for institutional
procedures involving new drugs and new applications
of known drugs.

3. AN INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF
CONTROL PROCEDURE:
 QUALITY CONTROL:
The essential part of a hospital pharmacist’s
responsibility is the development of specifications
for drugs to be purchased and dispensed by the
hospital pharmacy. He should have knowledge of all
pharmaceutical properties necessary to assure a
quality product. Ability to determine conformance
to specifications of the drugs received.

CONTROL OF DISTRIBUTION
THROUGHHOUT THE HOSPITAL:
This phase of his responsibility is unique because of
special distribution problems related to drugs in
the hospital situation. Large quantities of drugs
after physically located outside of the pharmacy at
nursing station, supply rooms and clinical services.
The necessity of these controls for internal
distribution of drugs a special problem of the
hospital pharmacist.

4. ABILITY TO CONDUCT AND
PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH:
 a) TO PARTICIPATE IN MEDICAL
RESEARCH PROGRAM.
As for as participation in medical research program
is concerned the hospital pharmacist collaborates
with the principle investigator or serve as a co-
investigator in designing and conducting research
activities involving the use of drugs. For this
purpose the pharmacist must have the abilities to
have complete knowledge about Pharmacology, Bio-
Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, toxicology etc.

 b) PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH.
In Pharmaceutical research program the
pharmacist can improve the usefulness of
pharmaceutical preparation which can develop
methods for preservation and stabilization of
drugs and pharmaceuticals can improve the
therapeutics effectiveness. When a drug is first
developed or is being initially evaluated. The
hospital pharmacist can also develop therapeutic
basis & vehicles etc.

5. ABILITY TO CONDUCT TEACHING AND
IN SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM:
 The pharmacist may prepare lecturer and
demonstration for the nursing staff concerning such
topics as storage of drugs, drugs dosage forms and
pharmaceutical mathematics involving conversion,
percentage solutions and calculations of dosage,
topics each as prescription drugs, dosage and
incompatibilities may be presented to the medical
staff or medical interns and residents.
 The hospital pharmacists must develop well as that
the period of internship or residency is a meaning-
full educational experience to future practitioner of
hospital pharmacy.

6. ABILITY TO ACT AS ADMINTRATOR &
MANAGE A HOSPITAL PHARMACY:
 The hospital pharmacist’s administrative and
management responsibilities include planning
and integrating pharmacy policies, budgeting, stock
control, maintenance of records and preparation
of reports.
 The pharmacist must be thoroughly familiar with
the organization of hospital, staff and have
relationship and proper lines of communications
with all.

 The chief pharmacist is responsible for interview,
selection and evaluating personnel for work in the
pharmacy. He organizes and schedules the work of
pharmacy. Personally he is responsible for the
accountability and expenditure of pharmacy funds.
The chief pharmacists keep records on all pharmacy
operation which may be required legally or
administratively.
 In hospitals in which patients are charged for drugs,
hospital pharmacists develop or participate in
development of polices relating to charges made for
pharmaceutical services.
