RUNWAY ORIENTATION

DEFINITION OF RUNWAY

 Runway
 “Rectangular area on an aerodrome used for landing and takeoff.”
 Runway orientation is important in airport planning.
 Current practice is to layout a runway in the direction of prevailing wind.
RUNWAY NUMBER

 Runway Numbers
 Runways are numbered according the magnetic compass direction.
 Consists of two numbers one at each end of runway.
 Preceding that number are eight stripes.
 airport runways are numbered according to compass bearings. This means
runway numbers are based on the compass with 360 representing north, 90
representing east, 180 representing south, and 270 representing west. Runways
are numbered between 01 and 36.
 For runway headings, the last number is dropped and each individual number
is pronounced. For instance, a compass heading of 310 degrees would read 31
and be pronounced as three one.
 total percentage of wind blowing in north is taken from the collected value of wind data
and this point is marked along north direction .
 The wind data should usually collected for a period of atleast 5 years and preferably at 10
years to obtain an arrange data with sufficient accuracy .
 The best direction of runway is shown along the direction of the longest line on wind rose
diagram.
