Believer’s Big Brother

Reference Texts:
Hebrews 2:5-18
Hebrews 2:14-15
14 Since we, God’s children, are human
beings—made of flesh and blood—he
became flesh and blood too by being born
in human form; for only as a human being
could he die and in dying break the power
of the devil who had the power of death.
15 Only in that way could he deliver those

who through fear of death have been living

all their lives as slaves to constant dread.
Matthew 12:46-50 (TLB)
 46-47 As
Jesus was speaking in a
crowded house,[a] his mother and
brothers were outside, wanting to
talk with him. When someone told
him they were there,
48 he remarked,“Who is my
mother? Who are my brothers?”
 He
49 pointed to his
disciples.“Look!” he
said,“these are my mother and
brothers.”
 Then he added,“Anyone
50

who obeys my Father in

heaven is my brother, sister,
and mother!”
I. Our older brother
understands our problems
because he shared our
weaknesses and
temptations: He has "been
there and done that."
A. The story of His entry on the human
scene.

1. Born in an occupied land,

ruled by tyrants, His parents
are forced to make a long
journey as His birth drew
near.
2. Bornin the
roughest and most
unsanitary conditions.
MANGER
Luke 2:7-12
 7 and she gave birth to her first child, a son.
She wrapped him in a blanket[a] and laid him in
a manger, because there was no room for
them in the village inn.
 8 That night some shepherds were in the fields
outside the village, guarding their flocks of
sheep.
 9 Suddenly an angel appeared among them,
and the landscape shone bright with the glory
of the Lord. They were badly frightened,
 10 but the angel reassured them.
“Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you
the most joyful news ever announced,
and it is for everyone!
 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the
Lord—has been born tonight in
Bethlehem!
 12 How will you recognize him? You
will find a baby wrapped in a
blanket, lying in a manger!”
3. Soon after His birth,
the tyrant ruling his
homeland sent assassins
to kill Him. Spent His
early days in a foreign
land.
4. Member of a laborer’s
household. Expected to
perform "chores" and
learn a trade He would
never use.
B. He suffered severe temptation. One
story is told in Matt. 4.

1. Satanmade every effort to

cause Him to doubt the care
of the Father just as he did
Adam and Eve.
2. Of course, these weren’t the
last temptations. He faced
opposition by His enemies, false
accusations, desertion and betrayal
by His disciples.

3. In
the end, He died a lonely,
agonizing death while His loved
ones watched, unable to help.
C. This was a necessary process if He is to
be our Savior and High Priest. vv. 10, 17

1. BecauseGod cannot die,

Jesus must become a man in
order to give His life for His
brothers.
 2. Heis also qualified as our High
Priest by His humanity. The High
Priest must be chosen by God from
among men. Heb. 5:1

 3. Then, He is made perfect (complete

and competent) by His suffering. Each
High Priest came before God with a
sacrificial offering. Jesus’ sacrifice was
His own flesh and blood.
II. Our older brother will help when we are
attacked by the world’s worst bully:

A. We do have an
enemy who is out to
destroy our body and
soul in Hell.
Matt. 10:28 (TLB)

 “Don’t
28 be afraid of those
who can kill only your
bodies—but can’t touch your
souls! Fear only God who can
destroy both soul and body in
hell.
A. We do have an
enemy who is out to
destroy our body and
soul in Hell.
B. We are
introduced to Him
in the third chapter
of Genesis:
C. He is still active
in our world
today: I Pet. 5:8
I Peter 5:8 (TLB)
8 Be careful—watch out for
attacks from Satan, your great
enemy. He prowls around like
a hungry, roaring lion, looking
for some victim to tear apart.
III. Our older Brother will help us face the
greatest threat in the universe - death.

A. It’s
the threat Satan
brought upon us in the
Garden of Eden when he
introduced sin.
Now, we all must die
because we all sin. "The
sting of death is sin.”

But, Jesus came into the

world to destroy the works
of the devil. I Jn. 3:8
I John 3:8 (TLB)
 But
8 if you keep on sinning, it
shows that you belong to
Satan, who since he first began
to sin has kept steadily at it.
But the Son of God came to
destroy these works of the
devil.
B. Our big brother, Jesus, is the Author of
our salvation.

The word literally means

"leader" or "pioneer". He is
the one who planned our
salvation and the one who
implemented the plan.
C. The real threat we face is sin. (I Cor.
15:55)

"Where, O death, is your

victory? Where, O death, is
your sting? The sting of
death is sin, and the power
of sin is the law."
John 15:13 (NLT)

There is no greater
love than to lay down
one's life for one's
friends.
Jesus is a Big Brother
like that. He gave His life
for you. Will you accept
His love, be thankful to
Him and give your life to
Him?
