HANDS-ONLY

American Heart Association 2017 Guidelines

Legal Bases:

• Policy: A.O. 155 s. 2004

“Basic Life Support Training is mandatory to all
health workers”

• HEMB Goal:
“At least one member of each household shall be
trained in BLS”
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

• an electrical malfunction in the heart

that causes an irregular heartbeat
(arrhythmia) and disrupts the flow of
blood to the brain, lungs and other
organs - is a leading cause of death.

• According to the American Heart

Association, about 90 percent of people
who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests
die.
What is hands only CPR?
• is series of assessments and
interventions using techniques
and maneuvers made to bring
victims of cardiac and
respiratory arrest back to life.

• CPR can double or even triple a

person’s chance of surviving.
STEPS for “Hands Only” CPR
Step 1 : CHECK
Area/scene safety

If the victim is unresponsive

- Tap the shoulders
If the victim is not breathing
- Rise and fall of the chest
Step 2 : CALL
• Assertively tell someone to call the
emergency contact number

*If you are by yourself, call before

starting CPR

Send for an Automated External

Defibrillator (AED)
Step 3 : COMPRESS

• Kneel facing the victim’s chest

• Place the heel of one hand on the

sternum in the center of the chest
between the nipples and then place
the heel of the second hand on top
of the first so that the hands are
overlapped and parallel.
Step 3 : COMPRESS

• Position shoulders over hands

with elbows locked and arms
straight

• Compress down and release pressure

smoothly (5-6 cm deep), keeping
hand contact with chest at all times
at 100-120 compressions per minute.
Continue CPR until…..

• AED/Defibrillator arrives

• ALS provider takes over

• victim starts to move

What is an Automated External
Defibrillator (AED)?

AEDs are
sophisticated,
computerized devices
that can analyze
heart rhythms and
generate high voltage
electric shocks.
They may look different, but they all function the Same!
Open and Follow Instructions (AED)

• Turn AED ON
• Apply Pads to Bare Chest
• Plug in Pads (if
necessary)
• Analyze Patient (CLEAR!)
• Push Shock to
defibrillate,
if directed (CLEAR!)
• Immediately resume CPR
