• However, even managers who don’t live up to such lofty ideals and
expectations are important to organizations.
Why Manager is important?
• Business organizations deal with today’s challenges—the worldwide
economic climate, changing technology, ever increasing globalization,
and so forth.
• It is related to the ability to see the world and its problems with the
survival of the organization.
• Thus, it is needed a knowledge and skills to cope the challenges so
that they can be beneficial for the organization and sustainable.
• The question is who can do it? The answer is a manager.
• Manager has a role to accomplish or settle organization works.

• Manager coordinates and supervises the work of others so
that the work can be completed efficiently and effectively.
• Coordinate = make parts move together
• Efficient = using resources to obtain more out put
• Effective = do it right – the objective of organization can be
achieved on time.
• A manager’s job is not about personal achievement—it’s
about helping others do their work.
• A manager is someone who coordinates and oversees
(directs or supervises) the work of other people so that
organizational goals can be accomplished.

• Management consists of art and science.


• Art - related with people – culture – behavior.

• Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of
people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music
and arts.
• "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it,
our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong,
how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with
loved ones, and a million other things,“
• The explanation of culture indicates that people have not similarity
behavior. It also describes their expectation to fulfill their life
connected with the way they make a living.
• Thus, to manage people demands art to influence and lead them.
• Scientific management implies the art of knowing exactly what is to
be done and how it is to be done.
• Under this approach, scientific techniques are applied in the
recruitment, selection and training of workers and are also used in
tackling various industrial problems.

synthesizes workflows. Its main objective is improving economic

• Megginson, Mosley and Pietri define management as ‘working with
human, financial and physical resources to achieve organizational
objectives by performing the planning, organizing, leading and
controlling functions‘.
• According to Harold Koontz, “Management is an art of getting things
done through and with the people in formally organized groups. It is
an art of creating an environment in which people can perform and
individuals and can co-operate towards attainment of group goals”.

• Managerial skills are the knowledge and ability of the individuals in a


managerial position to fulfill some specific management activities or
tasks.
• When we talk about managerial skills, we talk about the skills of a
manager to maintain high efficiency in the way how his or her
employees complete their everyday working tasks.
• Therefore, managers will need skills that will help them to manage
people and technology to ensure an effective and efficient realization
of their working duties.
Three Types of Managerial Skills
• Robert Katz identifies three types of skills that are essential for a
successful management process:
Conceptual Skills

• Conceptual skills are abilities that allow an individual to understand


complex situations to develop creative and successful solutions.
• It combines problem solving with the practice of conceptualizing a
practical issue (conceptualize = interpret observation with concept).
• These are the abilities to see the big picture to point out worth
mentioning elements in a situation and to understand relationship
among the elements, these abilities are important to take effective
decisions.
Human Skills
• Human or interpersonal management skills present a manager’s
knowledge and ability to work with people through attention and
communication to relationship with others.
• One of the most critical management tasks is to work with people.
Without people, there will not be a need for the existence of
management and managers.
• These skills will enable managers to become leaders and motivate
employees for better accomplishments. Also, they will help them to
make more effective use of human potential in the company by
inspiring enthusiasm and trust.
Technical Skills

• Technical skills are the knowledge of proficiency in a specific


task. It involves working with tools and specific techniques.
• These skills tend to be more important for first-line
managers because they typically are managing employees
who use tools and techniques to produce the organization’s
products or service the organization’s customers.
How to obtain the skills
• Becoming a good employee and keep recognizing how manager
works.
• Reading books of successful managers or leaders.
• Making relationship with many people who have great ideas.
• Watching performance of leaders.
• Developing discussion constructively with friends or colleagues and
open mind.
• Attending seminar, workshop and training.
• Finding a mentor.
