Fuzzy relations are fuzzy subsets of X×Y , i.e., mapping from X → Y . It
maps elements of one universe, X to those of another universe, say Y , through the Cartesian product of the two universes. A fuzzy relation R is mapping from the Cartesian space X × Y to the interval [0, 1] where the strength of the mapping is expressed by the membership function of the relation for ordered pairs from the two expressed as or µR (x, y). This can be expressed as R = {((x, y), µR (x, y))|(x, y) ∈ X × Y } is called a fuzzy relation on X × Y . Where the fuzzy relation R has membership function μR (x, y) = μA X B (x, y) = min (μA (x), μB (y)) i.e. each element of X belongs to the domain of R to a degree equal to the strength of its strongest relation to any y ∈Y .
Range and Height
The range ran of R(X,Y ) is a fuzzy relation on Y whose membership function is defined for each y ∈Y as i.e. the strength of the strongest relation which each y ∈Y has to an x ∈ X equals to the degree of membership of y in the range of R. The height h of R(X,Y ) is a number defined by
h(R) is the largest membership grade obtained by any pair (x, y) ∈ R
