WHAT IS
DEPRESSION?
“It is an illness that
interferes with daily life,
normal functioning, and
causes the pain for both
the person suffering
from disorder and those
who cares about
him/her”.
TYPES OF DEPRESSIVE DISORDER
Depressive disorder come in different forms:

 MAJOR DEPRESSION
It manifested by the combination of symptoms that interfere with the
ability to work, study, sleep, eat, or enjoy a pleasurable life.
 DYSTHYMIC DISORDER
It involves long term (two year or longer) less severe symptoms that do
not disable but keep one from functioning normally or feel good.
 PSYCHOTIC DEPRESSION
It occurs when severe depressive illness is accompanied by some of
psychosis, such as break with reality, hallucinations, delusions.
 POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION
It is diagnosed if a new mother develops a major depressive episode with
one month after delivery.
 SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER
It is characterized by the onset of depressive illness during winter months.
 BIPOLAR DISORDER
It is also called mania depressive illness characterized by cycling mood
changes: severe high (mania) and low ( depression).
PERSISTENT
DEPRESSIVE
DISORDER
Persistent depressive disorder, also
called dysthymia (dis-THIE-me-uh),
is a continuous long-term (chronic)
form of depression. You may lose
interest in normal daily activities,
feel hopeless, lack productivity, and
have low self-esteem and an overall
feeling of inadequacy. These feelings
last for years and may significantly
interfere with your relationships,
school, work and daily activities.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of persistent depressive disorder can
cause significant impairment and may include:
1. Loss of interest in daily activities
2. Sadness, emptiness or feeling down
3. Hopelessness
4. Tiredness and lack of energy
5. Low self-esteem, self-criticism or feeling incapable
6. Trouble concentrating and trouble making
decisions
7. Irritability or excessive anger
8. Decreased activity, effectiveness and productivity
9. Avoidance of social activities
10. Feelings of guilt and worries over the past
11. Poor appetite or overeating
12. Sleep problems
