HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF INDUSTRIAL
RELATIONS IN THE COUNTRY
• India was predominantly an agricultural economy till Independence in
1947.
• Even after Independence, the First Five-year Plan (1951—56) laid
emphasis on agriculture. With the Second Five-year Plan (1956—61) there
was a shift towards heavy industrialization.
• Over the years, the dependence of the performance of the industrial
sector on that of the agriculture sector has reduced.

• Its middle class has grown to over 250 million, a vast enough market,
even as over 220 million continue to live below the poverty line.

• The industrialization strategies and industrial policies followed in India


from Independence to the mid-1980s aimed at development and a faster
growth rate, but emphasized regulation rather than development.
MEANING AND CONCEPT
• The term „Industrial Relations‟ comprises of two terms:
• The term “Industrial Relations” comprises of two terms:
‘Industry’ and ‘Relations’

• “Industry” refers to “any productive activity in which an individual (or a group of


individuals) are engaged”.
• By “relations” we mean “the relationships that exist within the industry between
the employer and his workmen.”
• The term industrial relations explains the relationship between employees and
management which stem directly or indirectly from union-employer relationship.
DEFINITION

• According to Filippo :“ The term industrial relation refers to all types


of relations that exist in an industry , the employer and employees.”

• According to Armstrong: “ the term IR concerned with the system &


procedures used by unions, employers to determine the reward for
effort & other conditions employment , to protect the interests of the
employed & the employees, & to regulate the ways in which
employers treat the employees.”
OBJECTIVES

• To establish harmonious relations between operatives &


management.
• To avoid industrial conflicts.
• To raise productivity in the organization.
• To avoid governments interference in the working of the relationship
between employees &employer.
• To Provide better wages and living conditions to workers.
