The Burnout Syndrome among

Urban Nurses
This is a slide about research proposal on the burnout syndrome among
urban nurses
Definition of burnout syndrome
• A response to chronic work-related stress comprising three
components or dimensions:
• Emotional exhaustion
• Depersonalization
• Personal accomplishment
Background
Nurses working in different departments face many challenges:

• excessive workloads
• clinician shortage
• increased distress experienced by stakeholders
Problem Statement
• Is a problem for different types of stakeholders in the healthcare
sector.
• It affects nurses due to their emotional and physical health at risk
caused by significant burden of work.
• Patients may feel the negative impact of nurses’ burnout.
• Poor working condition of the healthcare facilities.
Significance and Purpose of Study
• Newly acquired knowledge will assist researchers and clinicians in the
development of solutions to deal with nursing burnout.

• To acquire new information that will guide future efforts to improve

workplace experiences of nursing professionals.
Aims & Objective of Study
• The increased knowledge of nurses’ experiences of professional
burnout
• The creation of knowledge base, necessary for the development of
solutions to cope with nursing burnout.
• Focus on the situation in a single healthcare facility to understand the
experiences of nurses in several large hospitals located in the urban
area.
Research Questions
• What is the prevalence of nursing burnout among nurses at the
researched healthcare facility?
• What factors contribute to the developing of burnout among
respondents?
• What strategies do nurses find useful to cope with professional
burnout?
Hypothesis
• Provide a foundation for the development of hypotheses that the
future research will either support or disprove.
• H1: The majority of nurses in the healthcare facility have experienced at least
one symptom of professional burnout

• H2: Certain factors have a greater influence on the development of burnout

• H3: Organizational and collective strategies against nursing burnout are more
effective than personal strategies employed by individual nurses
Independent and Dependent Variables
• Dependent variable: professional burnout
• Independent variables:
• high standards of work
• great number of patients
• lack of autonomy
• excessive bureaucracy
• pressure for productivity
• unsatisfactory workplace environment
• poor equipment
Scope and Limitations

• Scope encompasses evidence collected by empirical studies & the

data collected for this study
• Limitations of the study are applicable only to urban populations in
the country of data collection.
• Cultural differences may affect how nurses in different contexts
respond to factors causing
• burnout
• the condition itself
• strategies meant to alleviate the symptoms.
Literature Review Introduction

• Demonstrates the existence of a sufficient knowledge foundation for

the development and execution of the proposed study.
• Additionally, provides evidence on the need for further research
• This section offers a look at the conservation of resources theory
applicable to the situation as an instrument to guide the research.
Review of Related Literature
• Symptoms of nursing burnout:
• Exhaustion
• Alienation
• Reduced performance
• Headache
• sleep disturbances
• poor concentration
• Working in chronic stressful conditions leads to the problem.
• Causes of burnout:
• Workload
• High standards of work
• Great number of patients
• Lack of autonomy
• Excessive bureaucracy
• Pressure for productivity
• Unsatisfactory workplace environment
• Poor equipment
Theoretical Framework
• The conservation of resources theory presents substantial interest for
the study

• Nurses and other workers from different domains experience stress

when workplace conditions prevent them from keeping the
emotional and physical resources that they need.
Theory Rationale
• Conservation of resources theory focuses on either perceived or
actual loss of resources in the workplace.
• The framework takes into consideration that employees’ perceptions
may not necessarily reflect the reality
• The theory is suitable for the research questions because the topic of
professional burnout covers the issues of both emotional and physical
health, much like the theory itself.
Theoretical Concepts

• 4 types of resources acknowledged by theory of conservation

resources.
• Object resources are physical objects and experiences, like
transportation and facility space.
• Ultimately, energy resources entail the ability to gain other types of
resources and include finances, expertise, and knowledge
• As for the differentiation between resource gain and resource loss,
the latter is perceived as much more salient than the former
Methodology Introduction
• The reliability and credibility of the project depends on the correctly
selected, developed, and implemented method.
• This section details the different dimensions of this quantitative study.
• Proper type, design, setting, sampling, research instruments, and data
collection methods are discussed.
Study Type
• Type of the research is quantitative nature.
• Useful for the identification of concrete facts about the phenomena
explored in them.
• Project benefits from the use of the quantitative research type
because the facility requires hard evidence about the experiences of
its employees with work-related stress, burnout, and other relevant
factors.
• Study enables researchers to focus on specific variables that lead to a
detailed exploration of the profound nature of realities and their
dynamic structure.
Study Design
• Proposed project will use empirical, cross-sectional research.
• Empirical research focuses on the interviewing of respondents, among
other research activities.
• Since the project will apply a survey to collect data, the project will follow
the principles of empirical research that targets the use of statistics.
• The cross-sectional research design means that the data will be collected at
a single point of time with the help of a representative sample.
• The peculiarities of the project prevent the team from using a longitudinal
study
Study Design Rationale
• Importance of the empirical cross-sectional study design is high.
• The research will benefit from the focus on empiricism to provide the
audience with hard data using solid evidence.
• The project will provide clinicians and researchers with answers as
soon as possible, which they will be able to use in the nearest future
to
• create solutions
• change the factors that contribute to nurses’ burnout.
Study Setting
• The selection of a study setting is similarly important for the
outcomes of the study.
• The increased level of burnout among urban nurses according to
Nowrouzi et al. (2015) suggests that this population would have a
great connection to
• the topic
• research questions
• survey questions
Population
• Nurses are a vulnerable population among clinicians to develop the
burnout symptom.
• Accountable individuals will contact nurses from several healthcare
facilities for these nurses to represent the greater population.
• Importantly, nurses and nursing students from different domains are
susceptible to burnout.
• This study will be interested in surveying nurses from different
departments
Sampling
• Use technique of probability or random sampling.
• Random sample will be chosen from the larger population.
• This technique would be effective because the project will have to use
the help of those respondents who would agree to participate.
• Formula : n = N*(Zα/22 *p*(1-p) / MOE2) / (X + N – 1), and based on
this formula, it is recommended to recruit around 385 participants
• The inclusion criteria are the experience of working as a nurse for at
least 6 months and the fluent or native use of English, while no
exclusion criteria are developed for this study.
Research Instrument
• Is a survey, or a questionnaire, with close-ended questions.
• Since the research will be of quantitative nature, the use of close-
ended questions would facilitate data collection and minimize the
time spent on the research.
• Research instruments must be developed with utmost care
• Therefore, this study will use empirical findings of other studies and
the theoretical framework to develop an effective research tool.
Research Instrument II
Data Collection Method
• Data collection method will be the questionnaire method

• The questionnaire method will help the researcher to collect all the
necessary information about the burnout experiences of nurses.

• The method for the protection of human subjects will rely on an

informed consent form.
Data Collection Process

• Researcher provide healthcare facilities with the basic information

about the research to encourage hospitals to disseminate this
information to participate among nurses
• Researcher provide exhaustive information to potential respondents
and gain informed consent
• The necessary number (n=385) of respondents will be selected
arbitrarily, respondents will complete questionnaires in the places of
their selection and send the completed forms to the researcher
Data Collection Process II
Ethical Considerations
• Primarily, informed consent is the most important part of the ethical
approach in this study
• Informed consent protects the respect for autonomy of human
subjects
• No identifiable information will be collected, while all the data will be
stored in the personal computer of the researcher protected by the
password
Data Analysis

• Upon data collection, the stage of data analysis will dissect and interpret
the data to drive at relevant findings.
• The detection of the best data analysis methods will helps the research to
become useful to the different audiences.
• Method employed in this study appropriate for the study design will be
inferential analyses, namely correlation and regression
• These types of analyses will illustrate and describe the relationships among
variables.
• The IBM SPSS® software will be used to gain results from the data.
• The method of displaying findings will focus on the provision of software-
generated tables and their interpretive descriptions.
Conclusion
• Proposed research tackle the complex issue of the burnout syndrome
• This study will be of significant relevance and usefulness since healthcare
systems in different contexts depend on the health and wellbeing of
clinicians
• Provides sufficient information for the development of a survey that covers
• demographics questions
• burnout
• factors causing this condition
• interventions that have shown evidence to mitigate the damages of burnout.
• Conservation of resources theory will also enable researchers to generate
an effective research tool, whereas practitioners will find solutions based
on the knowledge gained through the application of this theoretical
framework.
