• are earthquake faults that have

reached the surface. No opening or

fissuring happpens during
movement of the faults, so it should
remain closed.
• is another important effect of
earthquakes which occurs when the
earthquake movement along a fault
actually breaks the Earth's surface
-one have probably seen or
heard these scenes from
folktales, books and movies.

Can these things happen during an

earthquake?
-many of these accounts do not give us an
accurate pictures of what really happens
when the ground ruptures during an
earthquake.
Normal fault
-involves mainly downward movement
of the ground across the fault called
the hanging wall. The hanging wall is
the block on the right side of the faults.

Thrust fault
-involves mainly upwards movement of
the hanging wall. In any type of faulting,
opposite blocks simply slide past each
other (in plan or section view) along the
fault plane. No opening is involved.
Strike -slip fault
-involves a dominantly horizontal
shifting of the ground. The two types
of strike -slip fault are distinguished
from each other by the sense of
motion of part of the ground located
on opposite side of the faults, which
is either left-lateral or right -lateral.
The End.
