The wave passes under the buoy from
left to right. However, the buoy
moves up on the crest, down into the
trough, and back to its original position.
Suppose you throw a pebble into a pond. Thirty wave crests
caused by the splash pass by a rock in 15 seconds. What is the
frequency?
If 4 waves pass the edge of a pier in 20 seconds, what is the wave
frequency?
What do you think will happen to the frequency
when we shorten the length of the pendulum?

1. Attach the clamp to the ring stand.

20 cm (You will need to put the ring stand
backwards on the desk or it the pendulum
length will be too long.)
2. Tie one end of the string to the washer. Then, tie the other end of the string to the
clamp so that it is about 60 cm long.
3. Pull the washer to the side so it is about 20 cm from the rest position. Release the
washer so it swings back and forth.
4. Count the number of to and fro vibrations of the pendulum for 30 seconds. Record
this data in the table.
5. Calculate the frequency of the pendulum by taking the number of vibrations and
dividing it by 30.
6. Repeat the steps with a pendulum 40 cm long and 20 cm long.
