    Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system. He was born in 1856 in Smiljan, Austrian Empire (present-day Croatia). Some of his most important inventions and contributions included conceiving the induction motor and developing rotating magnetic fields. He helped initiate the development of technologies using alternating current like AC motors and transformers. Tesla immigrated to the United States in 1884 and later became a citizen. He worked for Thomas Edison for a time before striking out on his own to develop AC power.
