HYPERTENSION
• is the amount of resistance of blood flow
through arteries and the body organ.
• It is a silent killer.
• It increases the risk of cardiovascular
diseases.
Mechanism of Anti-hypertensive:
There are basic drugs that effective in controlling Hypertension in
varying degrees.
• Alpha Blockers
• Beta Blockers
• Ace Inhibitors
• Angiotensin II receptor Antagonists
• Calcium-Channel Blockers
• Sympatholitics-Older Agents
• Vasodilators
• Natural supplements
Examples are the following:
• Alpha 1 Blocker
Doxazosin Alfuzosin Terazosin Prazosin
• Alpha 2 Blocker
Yohimbine
• Non- Selective
Phenoxybenzamine
Mechanism of Actions:

Preferred and recommended in patient with asthma,

peripheral vascular disease and heart failure.

They relaxes both arterial and venous vascular vessels.

They reduce blood pressure by dilating the peripheral

vascular resistance.
Examples of Beta Blockers:
Metoprolol Succinate Bisoprolol Carvedilol
Mechanism of actions:

• It decreases the heart rate

• It reduced the arterial

pressure

• It blocks the activity of

the beta-receptor

• Decreases oxygen
consumption
Example of Ace inhibitor Drugs:

Captopril Lisinopril Benazepril Lisonapril

Mechanism of Actions:

• It lowers blood pressure and increases the blood to

heart.

• It decreases the action of Peripheral vascular resistance

without increasing the cardiac output, heart rate, and
cardiac contractility.
Examples of Angiotensin Receptors Blocker:

Losartan Candesartan Eprosartan telmisartan

Mechanism of Actions:

It blocks the conversion of angiotensin I to

angiotensin II and its effect by blocking the
angiotensin converting enzyme.
Examples of Calcium Channel Blockers:

Amlodipine Verapamil Nicardipine Felodipine

Mechanism of Action:

• Reduce heart rate

• Cause peripheral arterial vasodilation

• Decrease myocardial oxygen demand
