Graphic Organizers

What are graphic organizers?
● Visuals or pictures created to represent ideas, text, or connection
between texts.

● Examples:
Purpose
● Graphic organizers aid comprehension by enabling readers to label
aspects of a text, using language from that text, to visually illustrate the
connections between events and characters
● How it supports English Language Learners:
○ They support ELL students by taking a lot of potentially confusing
English vocabulary and concepts and presenting them in an
organized, visual format.
Teacher Role
● Grouping: any type of grouping (whole group, small group, individual).
● Teacher Role:
○ Identify teaching purposes: text that can be used for graphic organizer.
○ Explain the purpose: explain purpose and model how to use.
○ Involve students: walk students through it, ask them questions.
○ Discuss connections: support students in discussing the connections while using text
based vocabulary.
○ Provide Additional Practice: encourage them to use the graphics to represent their
understanding in a variety of contexts.
Student Role
● Use the graphic organizer to examine texts from a variety of perspectives.
It helps students understand the text and make connections.

Can be used for all content areas.
