WHAT IS QUALITATIVE RESEARCH ?

A scientific method of observation to gather non-numerical data , it refers to the meanings


, concepts , definitions , characteristics , metaphors,
symbols , and not to their counts or measures.
SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY

a thoughtful and coordinated attempt to search out, describe, explain and predict natural
phenomena.
Scientific inquiry requires the sharing of findings and ideas for critical review by colleagues
and other scientists.

Qualitative designs does not use hypotheses. They may state an observational question to be
explored.

Ideally the topic is narrowed down to a specific one sentence statement of the proble
(Nieswiadomy 2012)
Qualitative research views reality as a subjective and multi-faced experience using questions more closely tied to the
human experience, such as

“What is it like to be lonely?”(BORBASI AND JACKSON 2012)

“How do you feel?”(HOFFMANN et al 2013)

The research question usually contains a reason, and the background to the problem.

If controversial findings have evolved from related studies completed in the past then you have a valid reason
for pursuing your investigation since it should enable you to present additional information, which may clarify the
controversy.

If the research problem is framed in the context, rambling literature review, then the research problem may
appear trivial and uninteresting.

In short, it is also appropriate in this part to provide a very brief critical review of previous
investigations relevant to your problem as well as presenting relevant experiences in the workplace that has
something to do with the conception of the present problem to investigate which serves as the anchor of the
study.
