CONDITIONAL SENTENCE

What is conditional sentence?
Conditional sentence are sentence expressing factual implications,or
hypothetical situations and their consequences.

There’s 2 type of conditional sentence main clause and if clause

Example: I will come if he invites me

main clause If clause


Conditional sentence type zero
Zero conditional sentences express general truths—situations in which
one thing always causes another

FORM: if + simple present, simple present


EXAMPLE: If we burn paper, it becomes ash.

Because conditional sentence express general truths. we can change IF


to when
Example: when it rains,it’s wet
Conditional sentence type 1
• It is possible and also very likely that the condition will be
fulfilled.
• Refer to the future

FORM: IF + SIMPLE PRESENT,WILL FUTURE


EXAMPLE: if I find her address,I’ll send her an invitation
Conditional sentence type 2
• It is possible but very unlikely,that the condition will be fulfilled
• Refer to situations in the present or future

FORM: IF + simple past, would+ infinitive


EXAMPLE: If I found her address,I would send her an invitation
Conditional sentence type 3
It is used to express the past and the impossible situations that can no
longer be changed.

FORM: IF + PAST PERFECT,PERFECT CONDITIONAL (would+have+past participle)

• Examples: If he had talked to me, I would have listened to him. ( but he


didn’t talk to me )
• If it had rained last weekend, we would have stayed at home. ( but it
didn’t rain last weekend)
• If she had saved enough money, she would have bought a new bicycle. (
but she didn’t save enough money )
