 Reinforcement theory of motivation
was proposed by B.F Skinner and his
associates.
 It states that behavior is a function of
its consequences.
 It is based on “LAW OF EFFECT” i.e.
individual behaviour with positive
consequences tends to be repeated,
but individual behaviour with
negative consequences tends not to be
repeated.
The term reinforcement refer to any thing
stimulus which strengthen and
encouraging the designated behaviour
 It implies giving a
positive response when
an individual shows
positive and required
behaviour.

Immediately praising or rewarding

an employee for doing good job will
increase the probability of desired
behaviour.
 It implies rewarding an
employee by removing
undesirable consequences.

By declaring Saturday as an official

holiday in exchange for a higher target
that must be achieved by Friday,
employees would be motivated to work
hard during the weekdays. This works as
a negative reinforcement because the
unpleasant experience of working on a
Saturday is removed
 Punishment refers
to add something
aversive in order
to decrease
undesirable
behaviour in
future.

Suspending an employee for

breaking the organizational rules
 It implies negative
behaviour followed by
the removel of positive
consequences
unintentionally.
 To increase productivity
 To reduce absenteeism
 To increase safety behaviour
 This theory overlooks the internal state of individual
i.e. the inner feeling and drivers of individual.
 The external environment must be effective and
positive so as to motivate employee.
 This theory totally based on what happens to an
individual when he takes some action
