International Convention on Ozone Depletion

Most of the countries have seen the threat created by

Ozone Depletion and had agreed to a treaty called
Montreal Protocol. This protocol will help humans to
stop making and using ozone-eating chemicals.
The Montreal Protocol was enacted in 1987 and was
signed in by American President Ronald Reagan which
banned CFC refrigerants in air conditioners and
refrigerators. This was designed to help protect the
ozone layer.
As quoted by Kofi Annan, Former General Secretary
of the United Nations, Perhaps the single most
successful international agreement to date has been
the Montreal Protocol.
Predictions on ozone layer

 Scientists did predict that ozone depletion should peak around

2010.
 Reduction in release of CFCs and other ozone-eating substances
will heal the ozone layer.
 By year 2065, stratospheric ozone should return to the amount
present in 1980.
 Until then we can expect higher levels of UV Radiation on the
planet earth.
OUTCOMES OF INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ON
OZONE DEPLETION

 Less usage of all prohibited substances as decided in Montreal

Protocol and other international conventions on ozone depletion.
 To make sure that we take proper precaution to avoid bad health
conditions due to exposure to harmful UV rays.
 To reduce vehicular emissions which when gets mixed with air,
causes ozone depletion.
 Ban of CFC refrigerants in air conditioners and refrigerators.
 To proceed towards a better earth by implementing the idea of
“Sustainable Development”.
