Iron deficieny anemia

Definition
• Iron deficiency anemia is hypochromic microcytic
anemia that occurs due to iron deficiency in
nutrition a qualitative decline in the synthesis
hemoglobin
• Anemia is most common in infants and children

Clinical Symptoms

• From History taking, is there any :


- Letargi / weak
- irritability
- difficulty in concentrating
- changes in behavior
- Pica
- headache, get tired quickly
- lack of interest in playing
•Physical Examination:
• Dysphagia
• pallor of skin
• pallor of mucous membranes
• tachycardias
• congestive heart failure
• icterus.
• hepatomegaly, splenomegaly
• koilonychia (spoon nails)
Laboratory Examination
Iron deficiency Anemia
Erythrocytes Changed form : microcytosis,
hypochromia, poikilocytosis
Hemoglobin decreased
MCV < 76
MCH < 27
MCHC < 32
Reticulocytes normal / decreased
Iron serum < 30
TIBC 350 – 500
Iron saturation < 20%
Management of iron deficiency anemia

• Correction of iron • First line therapy


deficiency => restore - oral iron therapy
hemobglobin level
• Provide iron reserves. • Iron sulfate 300 mg contain 60
• Parenteral iron maybe mg elemental iron
needed • 325 mg iron gluconate contain
• Provide basic disease 36 mg elemental iron
therapy
