Is Nuclear Power in Jordan Safe?

• Nuclear energy provides more than 15% of the world's electricity,

34% of the electricity generated in the European Union. The United
States, France and Japan, produce 56.5% of the total electricity
generated from nuclear reactors around the world.

• Nuclear power plants are similar in most of their components with

conventional steam plants, but they use nuclear fuel instead of
fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal).

• Nuclear power plants generate electricity by exploiting the

tremendous heat produced by nuclear fission in the reactor core.
This is done through the use of cooling water in the reactor core so
that it turns into a large amount of pressurized steam which is used
to move large turbines to generate electricity.
Nuclear Power Plant
(NPP)
• Nuclear energy is the result of the interactions of nuclear fission or
nuclear fusion. In the first case one nucleus (ejects a particle) which
affects another nucleus and results in a chain reaction accompanied by
liberation of enormous thermal energy. The second case is produced by
the conversion of hydrogen nuclei into helium, resulting also in huge
amounts of energy.

• Presently, only nuclear fission is used in generating electricity. The physical

properties of this nuclear reaction are used to advantage by using heat
produced to convert water into steam which drives giant turbines whose
spinning results in the generation of electricity.

• Since the first nuclear power reactor appeared in the fifties of the last
century, the number of nuclear power plants has increased to more than
440 reactors in 32 countries.
Nuclear Reactors In The World
• Jordan's nuclear program consists of two
major projects:

1. To construct a nuclear power plant for the production of electricity and

the desalination of water using nuclear reactors.

2. Project exploitation of the natural nuclear resources present in Jordan,

primarily uranium.
Areas of Uranium Deposits
• The program includes construction of the Jordanian
nuclear research reactor with a capacity of 5 to 10 MW
as an important part of the infrastructure of nuclear
technology and the focal point of the Centre for
Nuclear Science and Technology.

• The research reactor will be used to train a new

generation of nuclear scientists and engineers, and to
provide support for a variety of services in the medical
and health, as well as agricultural and industrial fields.
• Jordan's work on the development of nuclear energy
strategy since 2001. The focus of this strategy in its
various stages, is on a number of core features that
include:

1. Ensure the security of energy supply, including oil

2. Exploit the national uranium resources
3. Encourage partnerships between the public and
private sectors
4. Provide energy for desalination projects
5. Develop industries related to the energy sector
• The strategy aims to generate electricity through
nuclear reactors to meet the growing demand for
electrical load and water desalination. It also addresses
the nuclear fuel cycle and enrichment strategy using
acidification with less than four percent as linked to the
international safeguards system and nuclear waste
treatment. It works to achieve the strategic readiness
of the state in terms of investment in studies, training
and rehabilitation of Jordanian manpower in the field
of nuclear energy. It seeks sources to self-fund projects
without relying on directly or overtaxing the state
treasury with an additional burden.
Jordan Electric Load Forecast
• The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission identified six
major challenges that must be dealt with and responded
to in order to move forward with the development of
nuclear energy program, namely:

1. Exploitation of uranium ores

2. Funding
3. Nuclear fuel cycle and waste management
4. Choice of reactor technology and appropriate
application.
5. Development of human resources
6. Readiness of the state and the political environment
• Nuclear power plants are divided into three parts: the nuclear core
,the turbine facility and the rest of the station .

• The choice of reactor power plant is an important part of the

nuclear program, to consider this, the Authority looked specifically
to the third generation of reactors that have the latest technological
and output features, and the latest methods and techniques of
safety and security.

• The Commission shall take into account a number of features and

characteristics that include cost, safety, and international standards,
the fuel cycle, cooling requirements, and the ability to service
related industries including other technical standards and
technology.
• In addition to meeting the growing demand for electricity for homes, factories,
etc., a nuclear reactor will be able to supply the large amount of power needed for
desalination plants and pumping plants at a cheaper price than burning of fossil
fuels (oil and gas). This would be the proverbial “light at the end of the tunnel” in
the search for new sources of water.
• A nuclear power reactor project is an important first step in a number of strategic
national issues related to the economy and the natural and human resources,
energy, water and others.
• For example this project has many benefits such as :
1. Exploitation of uranium resources of local projects and for export
2. Reduce the volume of oil imports and the size of bill
3. Provision of electric power at economical and competitive prices
4. Provision of cheap energy sources for desalination of sea water and pumping
5. Support for the efforts of development and industrial progress and raising the
living standards
6. Creation of new opportunities for education, training and employment
• The project will have multiple benefits in
applications outside the field of energy, such
as :

1. diagnosis and medical treatment

2. scientific research
3. application of scientific and industrial research
agriculture, pharmacy, biology, environment, and
others.
