ITAIPU DAM
Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam is the largest
operational hydroelectric energy producer in
the world, with an installed generation capacity
of 14GW and the second largest dam in the
world.
BRIEF HISTORY
The year was 1960, The economy of
Brazil was booming so as the demand for
energy

Brazil found a way to the problem

exploit the parana river and create a
hydroelectric dam but needs the help of
their old enemy Paraguay

1966 the beginning of negotiations

between countries
BRIEF HISTORY
Paraguay and Brazil signed a
treaty in April 1973.

May 1975 - the beginning of

contruction

The goal was to create an

energy bonanza for both
countries
BRIEF HISTORY
One of the hardest job in the
construction was the diversion
of Parana river

It took 3 years of explosive,

mechanical diggers, and shear
brute force
BRIEF HISTORY
The project estimated the lost of
more or less 10000 people and
animals living in the Parana
valley and a near rain forest

There came to have

complications due to stormy
weather
BRIEF HISTORY
30000 workers are being pulled
out all over Brazil

Encountered problems due to

weak bedrock

As construction goes by the

Brazilian sun also gave the
workers a headache.
BRIEF HISTORY
October 1982 they closed the
diversion

the dam’s spillway was opened

May 1984 produced its first

electricity
BRIEF HISTORY
They planted trees at the
reservoir edge

Engineers evaluated river banks

for damage
FACTS
Itaipu binacional is the group or organization in charge in the
itaipu dam

January 2002 a major complication where 13/18 turbines of

the dam had power failure due to a cut power line

14 people died due to the water leaked from the temporary
structures

145 people died because of unspecified accidents

FACTS
The name "Itaipu" was taken from an isle that existed near the
construction site. In the Guarani language, Itaipu means "the
sounding stone".
WHAT KIND OF STRUCTURE IT IS?
The Itaipu Dam from the word itself is a hydroelectric dam.

Spanning 170 kilometers in length with a total flooded area of 1,350

square kilometers,
• Itaipu Dam is actually made up of four Dams.
*Concrete Wing Dam
*Main Concrete Dam
*Rock-Fill Dam
*Earth Fill Dam
WHEN WAS IT BUILT?
Paraguay and Brazil signed a treaty in April 1973.

May 1975 - the beginning of contruction

October 1982 they closed the diversion/ the

spillway was also opened

May 1984 produced its first electricity

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
located on the border between Brazil and
Paraguay on the Parana River.

Foz du Iguaco of Brazil and Hernandarias

of Paraguay
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE
STRUCTURE?
The purpose of the structure is to produce an energy bonanza for
Brazil and Paraguay.

Itaipu Porvides aroung 15% of the energy consumed in Brazil and

90% of energy consumed in Paraguay

It produced the most energy of any in the world as of 2016 setting a
new world record of 103098366 megawatt hours.
HOW IS THE STRUCTURE INNOVATIVE?
The structure is innovative as to, many problems are encountered in
constructing the dam and the structure have blended in the test of the
nature. The structure have gone through:

Diverting the Parana river

Weak bedrocks

Massive flooding
WHAT MAKES THE STRUCTURE A
WONDER OF THE MODERN WORLD?
It is a wonder of the modern world because of the following:

 The dam is a high energy producing structure that can fill up the
needs of two countries

The structure made is so massive and difficult that encountered a lot

of problems in the making

It is a collaboration work if two countries.

WHAT MAKES THE STRUCTURE A
WONDER OF THE MODERN WORLD?
It solved the demand of energy of the two countries
