Beach profiling/nourishment

Made by Filip
What is the beach nourishment?
Beach nourishment is supply of sand to the shore to increase the recreational
value and/or to secure the beach against shore erosion.
Nourishment can be regarded as a very natural way of fighting against coastal
erosion.
Soft solution.
Beach nourishment/beach renourishment/beach replenishment/beach restoration

There are three general reasons for beach nourishment:

1. Coastal erosion (acute and chronic)
2. Preventing flooding
3. Maintaining a wide recreational beach
The most important element for successful beach nourishment job is the quality of
nourished sand (borrow material) relative to the native sand.
• Grain size distribution (D50) – coarser sand is recommended
• Sorting of sand (Cu) – well sorted sand is recommended
• Color – not so important in terms of beach stability but important for beach look

Sand sources: inland, sand dredged offshore, sand moved from accretion area, etc.
In nature the hydrodynamic processes tend to sort the sediments in the profile so that the
grain size decreases with increasing water depth.
Characteristics of the sand determine the overall shape of the coastal profile known as
equilibrium profile concept
Equilibrium profile refers to a statistical average profile which maintains its form apart of
small fluctuations.
When a borrow sand is deployed in a coastal profile, neither the profile nor the grain size
distribution will normally match the equilibrium condition.

Nature will attempt to re-establish a new equilibrium profile so changes will occur in the
nourished profile. (erosion cannot be stopped)

So, if the borrow sand is finer than the native sand, beach will tend to form a flatter profile
then the natural one and if the sand is coarser that the native one, beach will tend to form
steeper profile.
Types of beach nourishment

• Section nourishment – distributed uniformly along the shoreline in the project

area
• Dune nourishment – increasing the strength of dunes against flooding/erosion
• Backshore nourishment - increasing the strength of beach against flooding/erosion
• Beach or foreshore nourishment – increasing the recreation value and secure beach against erosion
• Shoreface nourishment – adding the new sand in the littoral budget
• Profile nourishment – re-establishment of entire coastal profile
• Stockpile nourishment –nourishment of large amount of sand in a stockpile limited
to a short fraction of the shoreline in the project area
• Philosophy is that sand is distributed along the adjacent shoreline section by
the natural transport mechanisms.
