The main aim and motivation for adult education is to facilitate

Principles of Managing Participation

• Focus on the behavior, not the person.

• Protect the self-esteem of all participants.

• Stick to accomplishing the objectives.

• Use your agreed upon ground rules and objectives.

• Smile and let your body language and tone convey that you
welcome everyone’s participation.

Managing Under-Participation

• Provides little input and tends not to get involved

• Shy. Doesn’t like to be put on the spot

• New and/or inexperienced.

• Declining to answer or participate

Managing Over-Participation
• Has a comment for every idea and an answer to every question.

• Questions your knowledge and authority.

• Disrupts the session by carrying on side conversations with


someone else.

• Complicates the message by adding irrelevant issues.

• Talks at length on unrelated or insignificant topics.

• Explores beyond what is asked of them.
