Electric Double Layer

EN533:
Models of the EDL at a positively charged surface: (a) the Helmholtz model, (b) the Gouy–Chapman model, and (c) the Stern
model, showing the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) and outer Helmholtz plane (OHP). The IHP refers to the distance of closest
approach of specifically adsorbed ions (generally anions) and OHP refers to that of the non-specifically adsorbed ions. The OHP is
also the plane where the diffuse layer begins. d is the double layer distance described by the Helmholtz model. ψ0 and ψ are the
potentials at the electrode surface and the electrode/electrolyte interface, respectively.
A simple electronic scheme equivalent to the electrochemical cell. Ru resistance uncompensated in the regular
three-electrode system; Cd differential capacity of the double layer; Rf resistance to faradaic current at the electrode
surface, RΩ solution resistance compensated in the three-electrode system
