WHAT IS A FIREWALL?

 Network security system

 monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network

traffic

 Controlling is based on predetermined security rules.

 A firewall establishes a barrier between a trusted

internal network and un-trusted external network,
such as the Internet.
HOW FIREWALL WORKS

A firewall is typically installed between a user

system and network.
 The system may or may not have multiple
computers.
TYPES OF FIREWALLS
 Software-based firewalls
 They are often known as personal firewalls which
can be updated on personal computers.
 Hardware-based firewalls
 Hardware based firewalls run on a dedicated
computer (or appliance). Often, these offer a
better performance than software based.
 Most commonly used firewall vendors are
Windows, Comodo, Juniper, Cisco.
TECHNICAL CLASSIFICATION

 Packet filters – Does the filtering based on

extension of the incoming and outgoing
packets.
 Stateful Inspection - Does the filtering by
analyzing the header and trailer of data
packets
 Proxy Server Firewall – These filters the packets
At the application layer only.
