MODALS VERBS

Modals or modality is a form of
word that helps the verb. Capital
must be paired with verbs.
Therefore, modals is also often
called the pronoun.
For instance: they might express
ability (kemampuan), possibility
(kemungkinan), permission (izin),
obligation(kewajiban), etc
The kinds of modals

1. Can The Fungsional can is :


- To express ability
- To express possibility
- And to express permission.

Example:

Mempunyai arti: Maukah.? contoh: will you
help me please?

3. Shall (Akan, bolehkah)


Di gunakan untuk menyatakan kegiatan di
waktu yang akan datang.
ex: We shall come back this afternoon.

4. May (Boleh, mungkin, Harapan/semoga)


Digunakan untuk menyatakan izin (permission)
Ex: Marry may borrow my book
5. Must (Harus)
Kata must sama dengan Have to, yang
sama mempunyai arti harus.
ex: We must study hard atau We have to
study hard.
6. Should
Mempunyai arti: sebaiknya (anjuran),
seharusnya (kewajiban)
Ex: You look tired, you should take a
rest (anjuran).
7. Ought to
A.Would
Digunakan untuk menanyakan permintaan
yang lebih sopan.
Ex: Would you like to go with me?
B. Could
Ex: Could I come little late tomorrow?
C. Should
Ex: - You look tired, you should take a
rest (anjuran).
- We should do our exercises (
kewajiban).
D. Might
Menyatakan permintaan izin yang
lebih sopan dan formal dari pada
could, can, dan could. Ex: Might I
enter to the class now?

•Menyatakan Kemampuan (can dan


could)
Ex: I can sing, but I can’t dance.
•Menyatakan Perkiraan (will dan shall)
Ex: I shall/will visit my friend tomorrow.
•Menyatakan Penawaran (will dan
would you like…?)
Ex: Would you like to come to
her office?
•Mengungkapkan Permintaan (may I,
could I, can I, atau might I)
Ex: May I borrow your notebook?
•Menyatakan Keharusan (must dan
have to)

Ex: You must keep my secret.

•Menyatakan Ketidakharusan
(do/does/did not have to)
Ex: I did not have to go to the doctor.

•Menyatakan Larangan (must not)


Ex: You must not running here.
•Menyatakan Kepastian (must)
Ex: She must be sick.

•Memberikan Nasihat (should,


ought to, dan had better)
Ex: You should stop laughing.

•Memberikan atau Meminta
