Tumbling or Diffusion mixer

 Non-cohesive solid mixer

 It is a solid / powder mixing equipment
 Consists of a closed metallic vessel that rotates about an axis either
manually or with the help of a motor at an optimum speed
 Diffusion is the main mechanism of mixing in tumbling mixer
 It is also called diffusion mixer
WORKING PRINCIPLE

 In tumbling mixers, rotation of the vessels imparts movement to the material

by tilting the powder.
 The angle of the surface exceeds the angle of repose when the surface layers
of the particles go into a slide.
 Simple forms use a cylindrical vessel rotating on its horizontal axis, but shear
forces are low and end-to-end movement is slight.
 This may be overcome by including flights (a form of baffles), or the shape of
the vessel may be altered to avoid symmetry
DOUBLE CONE MIXER

 A double cone mixer consists of a vessel with two cones base to base, with or
without a cylindrical section
 It is so mounted that it can be rotated about an axis at right angles to the
line joining the points of the cones
 Tumblers of this type are available with a spray nozzle

Drum mixer
V-SHAPED MIXER
MULTIFUNCTONAL POWDER
ADVANTAGES

 They are easy to clean after use.

 Diffusion mixers require minimal maintenance.
 Product contamination is minimal
 Absence of moving blades or agitators minimizes the tendency of further size
reduction
DISADVANTAGES

 Requires high power

 Large differences in particle densities or wide particle size distribution of
materials lead to seggragation
 Diffusion mixers require head room for installation
APPLICATONS

 Used to handle dense slurries and heavy solids

 Diffusion mixers are best suited for free-flowing, non segregating powders
 They are widely used for mixing dry powders and granules in the
pharmaceutical
 They are also used for mixing powders of different densities.
