2 Classify types of gears and their

characteristic based on it`s function

Spur Gear
• Spur gear of straight-cut gears are the simplest type of gear.
• The edge of each tooth is straight and aligned parallel to the axis of rotation.
• These gears can be meshed together correctly only of they are fitted t parallel shafts
Helical gear

 This is a cylindrical shaped gear with helicoid teeth. There are widely used in
industry.
 Hence fir the same width, their teeth are longer than spur gears and have
higher load carrying capacity
 Hence for the same width, their teeth are longger than spur gears and have
higher load carrying capacity.
 They are recommended for very high speeds and loads.
Rack Gear

 A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a pair of gears
which convert rotational motion into linear motion.
 A circular gear called “the pinion” engages teeth on a linear “gear” bar called
the rack.
 Rack and pinion provides a less efficient mechanical advantage than other
mechanisms such as recirculating ball, but less backlash and greater feedback
 Example application : automatic house gate
Internal Gear

 This is cylindrical shaped gear but with the teeth inside the circular ring.
 Internal gears are often used in planetary gear system.
Straight Bevel Gear

 A bevel gear is shaped like aa right circular cone with most of its tip cut off.
 When two bevel gears mesh, their imaginary vertices must occupy the same
point.
 The angle between the shaft can be anything except zero or 180 degrees.
