body.

organs and support the body as
you sit, walk and run.
Skeleton- the bones that make
your skeletal system. All these
bones are joined into a
framework that protects the
delicate parts of the body and
gives shape to it.
The human skeleton is the internal
framework of the body. It is composed
of 270 bones at birth – this total
decreases to 206 bones by adulthood
after some bones have fused together.
The bone mass in the skeleton reaches
maximum density around age 30.
2 Main Groups of Skeletal System
Axial skeleton
-skull, backbone, rib, and
breastbone
Appendicular skeleton
-arms, legs, shoulder and pelvis
Axial Skeleton
Skull/ cranium
-a round box- like structure
In the head. It protects the
Brain and eyes.
Jawbone / mandible
-attached to the skull like a
hinge. It helps chew our
food.
Spinal column/ backbone
-is a long series of bones
Extending from the neck to
the hip. It consist of 26 small
bones.
Shoulder bone/ pectoral girdle
-The group of bones attached
To the top of the breastbone.
This includes collarbones or
clavicle and the left and right
scapula or shoulder blade
Breast bone/ sternum
-The bone of the chest is
attached to the ribs. The 12
Pairs of ribs forming the
rib cage and the pelvic
girdle are attached to the
Pelvis/ pelvic girdle
-consist of right and left
Hip bones and the lower
part of the spinal column.
-Supports the weight of
the body. It is the biggest
Collar bone/ clavicle
-extends between the
head and the chest.
-Connects the scapula
And the breastbone.
thigh bone/
femur
-The heaviest
and
longest bone of
the
tibia/ shine bone
Bigger than the medial
bone, fibula.
Tarsals/ ankle bone
- Bones of the ankle
