Navicular Disease
• Navicular disease is generalized heel
pain due to problems with the navicular
bone.
By Ronak Kelaiya 2
• Degenerative process that changes the
bone-initiation and progression of the
disease is a result of excessive and
prolonged forces of compression on the
bone
By Ronak Kelaiya 3
Predisposing factors
• Poor hoof conformation
- Long toes and low heels
- Narrow upright feet
• Extreme work on hard surfaces
• Standing in stalls for extended periods
of time
• Improper trimming and shoeing
By Ronak Kelaiya 4
Causes of navicular disease
Concussion or trauma of the navicular bone.
Thinning and erosion of the cartilage.
Degeneration of navicular bone.
Injuries of navicular bone and surrounding
areas.
By Ronak Kelaiya 5
Arterial obstruction
• Strain
• Inflammation of the ligament can obstruct
these blood vessels and reduce blood
flow to and from the navicular bone.
By Ronak Kelaiya 6
Signs
Often a unilateral lameness, mild and intermittent
Tip toe gait
Several months of pain
Feet change shape
Short choppy strides
Diagnosis
Signs
Radiography
Ultrasonography
By Ronak Kelaiya 7
Lateral radiograph of the foot in the horse. A lytic defect is
present in the flexor surface of the navicular bone (arrow).

Treatment
Management
Rest
Corrective shoeing
Mild exercise
Medication
* Vasodilators :- pentoxiphylline
* NSAID along with corticosteroids
Surgery :- Palmer digital neurectomy
Navicular bursal injection

Shoeing
• Correct or preserve dorsopalmar and lateromedial foot
balance
• Hoof pastern angle should be straight
• Foot trimmed to maintain heel mass and shorten toe to
facilitate breakover
• Elevation of heel may relieve pressure from DDFT on
palmar aspect of navicular bone
• Egg bar shoe: greater surface area disperses forces.
-Of 55 horses with navicular disease 53% had
permanent pain relief of lameness after egg bar
shoes in 12-40 month follow up.

shoeing
• Key points:
• Correct and maintain dorsopalmar and
lateromedial balance
• Ease breakover
• Maintain heel mass
• Protect palmar aspect of the hoof from
concussion
By Ronak Kelaiya 22
Medical therapies
• Intra-articular injection
• Intra-bursal injection
• Tilduronic acid (Tildren)
• NSAID’s
• Isoxuprine
-2.2% oral bioavailability

Treatment

Natural balance shoes with a full wedge-pad
and dental impression material placed in the
Palmar aspect of the foot can also be used to
treat horses with navicular disease/syndrome.
