CYCLONE
• A cyclone is a simple device(vessel) for
removing solids from a gas stream, using a fast
rotating flow and utilizes centrifugal force to
separate.
• Cyclone have no moving parts and available in
many shapes and sizes.
• Cyclones sometimes known as dust collectors,
separators , centrifugal separators , and inertial
separators and found in single as well as in
multiple stages.
CYCLONIC SEPARATION
A cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from
an air, gas or liquid stream, without the use of filters, through
vortex separation.
Working Principle
The flow enters near the top through the tangential
inlet, which gives rise to an axially descending spiral
of gas and a centrifugal force field that causes the
incoming particles to concentrate along, and spiral
down, the inner walls of the cyclone separator.
The collected particulates fall down to the bottom of
the cyclone by gravity and exit out through underflow
pipe while the the air moves up the center of the
cyclone and reaches the top.
Types
Vertical Cyclone Separator
Vertical cyclone separators are
used to remove 99% of free liquids
and solids 5 microns and larger.
These separators are particularly
effective for the removal of solids,
such as iron sulphides. The high
efficiency of these separators is
due to the unique design.
Single Cyclone Separator
They create a dual vortex to separate course from fine
dust.
The main vortex spirals downward and carries most of the
coarser dust particles.
The inner vortex created near the bottom of the
cyclone, spirals upward and carries finer dust particles.
Multi Cyclone Separator
• It consist of a number of small diameter cyclones,
operating in parallel and having a common gas
inlet and outlet.
• Multi-clones operate on the same principle as
cyclones creating a main downward vortex and an
inner vortex.
• Multi clones are more efficient than single
cyclones because they are longer and smaller in
diameter.
• The longer length provides longer residence time
while the smaller diameter creates greater
centrifugal force.
Industrial Usage
• Power stations
• Food processing plants
• Crushing, separation, grinding and
chemical
industries
• fossil and wood-waste fired combustion
units
• vacuum cleaning machines
Advantages Of Cyclone
• They can be used under almost any operating condition.
• No moving parts.
• Simple design.
• Can separate either solids or liquid particulates sometimes both.
• Can be fabricated from plate metal or, in the case of smaller
units.
• The collected product remains dry and, normally useful.
• Low installment cost.
• Simple maintenance.
• Constant flow rate.
Disadvantages Of Cyclone
• Offer low particulate collection
efficiencies especially for particulate sizes
below 5 μm.
• Subject to erosive wear and fouling if
solids being processed are abrasive or
‘sticky.
• Inability to handle sticky materials
