2. Proposed solution 3. Project life cycle 4. Future application 5. Q&A Project Details and problem identification • Basic project information: Project location: Hidd al Saadiyat island Client: SDIC (Saadiyat Development Investment Co.) • Significant development of an island started in 2013. (based on Google Earth) • Decision to locate residential units near to the shoreline, made them exposed to the hydrodynamic action of sea waves and currents which are constantly eroding shoreline. • As recommended by Aecom, development required (and still requires) protection from erosion and flooding. • At the moment villas don’t have any protection which might lead to further erosion and possible damage of plot boundaries. • After a big storm happened this year, Client realized how serious problem is and approached to us looking for a cost effective solution. Site visits photos Proposed solution • Proposed structure (revetment) could be made from either rock (AECOM proposed in one of theirs report) or geotextile tubes. Purpose of structure is protection of land structures from further erosion. • In this case, geotextile tube solution seemed as a better because: 1. It’s cheaper compared to rock. 2. It’s easy to install as it doesn’t require heavy equipment. 3. It’s easy to remove it in case of future developments. 4. It’s soft and smooth which make them safer compared to rock for usage in high recreational areas. 5. It has better aesthetical look. • Advantages of using tubes instead of bags are: 1. Cost reduction 2. Overall stability • Bags will be placed near to the staircases Project life cycle • Tendering phase 1. Offer Preliminary drawings Calculation of number of tubes and bags Estimation cost for installation 2. Negotiation and LOA signed • Execution phase 1. Design 2. Manufacturing of tubes 3. Installation on site • Closing of project 1. As built drawings Future application • In areas where high public usage is expected • When Client is looking for temporary structure which can be easily removed • Emergency structures that can be installed quickly • In areas where it’s low likelihood of vandalism • In areas where rock is not available or where it’s expensive • Inner (protected) layers of rock structures, such as groynes, breakwaters, etc. Q&A
